BABY

Expecting your first baby can be one of the most exciting — and overwhelming — times in your life. You want to do everything right, buy the best products, and be fully prepared before your little one arrives.

But here’s something most new parents discover quickly: baby stuff piles up fast.

Companies market thousands of products as “newborn essentials,” but many of them end up barely used. Before you know it, you could be a couple of years in with half a closet full of bags of baby clothes and an entire room filled with toys — ask me how I know.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare. It just means focusing on the items you’ll actually use during those first few months.

In this guide, I’ll walk through the true newborn essentials for 0–3 months, along with a few optional items that can make life a little easier.

A Quick Tip Before You Start Buying

Before buying everything on your list, it’s often helpful to wait until after your baby shower. Friends and family love gifting baby clothes, blankets, and toys. You may receive more than you expect.

Another surprise for many parents is how often hand-me-down baby clothes appear from unexpected places. Many people are happy to pass along gently used baby items rather than donate them. We received bags of clothes for our son and daughter from friends of friends. There are also other opportunities to get used baby items for free or heavily discounted if you search for them.

Babies grow incredibly fast during the first year, so starting with the basics and buying more later if needed can save a lot of money.

Clothing Essentials

Newborn clothing needs can vary depending on:

  • The season your baby is born

  • How often you do laundry

  • Your baby’s birth size

  • How often you go out

  • What you prefer for sleepwear

Most newborns spend their time in comfortable sleepers or simple onesies. You may also find that people like to gift a lot of clothes for the newborn to 3-6 month clothing range, so you may not even need to buy anything for this stage.

Clothing Basics

  • 4–8 onesies with envelope sleeves

  • 2–4 pants

  • 4–8 sleepers or pajamas

  • 3–6 pairs of socks or booties

  • 2–3 sleep sacks or swaddles

  • Newborn-safe laundry detergent

Nice to Have

  • 1–3 cute outfits for photos or outings

Sleep Essentials

Newborns sleep a lot, so creating a safe sleep environment is one of the most important things to prepare before baby arrives.

  • Crib or bassinet

  • Firm mattress

  • 2–4 fitted sheets

  • Dimmable bedside light for night feeds

Nice to Have

  • Cool mist humidifier

  • Baby monitor

Diapering Essentials

You’ll be changing diapers many times each day, so having a well-organized diapering setup makes life much easier.

Keep in mind that babies grow very quickly in the first three months, so don’t stock up on too many small sized diapers. If you expect to have a very large baby, they may even skip the newborn size and go straight to size 1. My second baby (born 6 lbs 10 oz.) moved into size 2 diapers by the time she was eight weeks old.

Basic Supplies

  • Diaper changing pad

  • Diaper bag

  • Portable changing pad

  • Diaper cream

Disposable Diapers

  • 2 large boxes of newborn size diapers

  • 2–3 large boxes of size 1 diapers

  • 2–3 large boxes of size 2 diapers

  • Unscented baby wipes

Cloth Diapers

  • 2-3 dozen cloth diaper inserts

  • 6-10 diaper covers

  • 2-3 dozen washable wipes

  • Cloth diaper laundry detergent

Nice to Have

  • Diaper pail

  • Diaper pail liners

Popular Diaper Pails

Popular Favorite: Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail

Budget-Friendly Option: Diaper Genie Complete

What I Personally Used: Diaper Dekor EKO Plus Diaper Pail - I bought this for cloth diapers I never really ended up using.

Bath Time Essentials

Newborns don’t need frequent baths, but having a simple bath setup ready makes things easier.

  • Baby bathtub

  • Baby shampoo/body wash

  • 2 hooded towels

  • 6 washcloths

Feeding Essentials

Every family feeds their baby differently. Some breastfeed, some pump, some use formula, and many use a combination.

The most important thing is simply that your baby is fed and growing well.

Basic Feeding Supplies

  • 6–8 burp cloths

  • Baby safe dish soap

  • Nursing pads

  • Bottle brush

  • 3-10 Bottles

  • 3-10 Bottle Nipples (Flow appropriate for age)

Breastfeeding Essentials

Breastfeeding can come naturally for some moms, but for many it takes practice and support. Having a few helpful tools ready can make the early weeks much easier.

With my first baby, I had planned to exclusively breastfeed, but I ended up needing to pump for a couple of months after he was born and was glad that I had a manual pump and breastmilk storage bags already on hand.

Having some of the following items ready before baby is born may give you peace of mind, but they are not necessarily essentials if breastfeeding comes naturally for you and your baby.

  • Breast pump

  • Breast pump flanges

  • Milk storage bags

  • Nipple shields

  • Nipple cream

Popular Breast Pumps

Manual Breast Pump: Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump

Hands Free Breast Pump: Momcozy M5 Smart APP Wearable Breast Pump

Great for catching the let-down: Haakaa Manual Breast Pump

What I Personally Used: I used both the Medela Manual Breast Pump and the Momcozy M5, though it didn’t have the Smart App feature at the time.

Formula Feeding Essentials

If you plan to formula feed — or want the option available — these supplies are necessary or helpful.

  • Dishwasher basket for small parts

  • Infant formula

Recommended by our tongue-tie doctor: Lansinoh Anti-Colic Baby Bottles

Baby Health and Grooming Essentials

Babies have really sharp little finger nails and often have very congested noses. Trimming their nails will be inevitable, but also having a few health items on hand can prevent late-night trips to the store when your baby isn’t feeling well.

  • Nail clippers or nail file

  • Baby thermometer

  • First aid kit

  • Nasal aspirator

Popular Nasal Aspirators

Popular Favorite: Frida Baby NoseFrida SnotSucker

Electric Option: GROWNSY Nasal Aspirator for Baby

What I Personally Used: We used the Frida Baby NoseFrida SnotSucker but I also bought the GROWNSY and barely use it.

Baby Gear Essentials

Some baby gear is absolutely essential, like a car seat if you don’t live somewhere with easy public transportation, and some baby gear simply makes everyday life easier, especially once you start leaving the house with your newborn.

  • Infant car seat

  • Stroller

  • Baby carrier

My Personal Favorite Newborn Products

After going through the newborn stage, there were a few products I found myself using almost every day. These are the items that made life the easiest during those first few months.

Boba Baby Wrap Carrier: Since we take our senior dog on morning walks, I prefer to wear my babies when they are very small. They graduate to the stroller when they’re bigger. This has been essential for nap times since I'm also chasing around a toddler.

LOVEVERY | The Play Gym: It was nice to have some visual stimulation for my babies and a small place to have tummy time.

Frida Baby NoseFrida SnotSucker: My second baby got sick when she was only four weeks old. It was a huge comfort to know that I could clear out her tiny nose so that she could breathe easier.

Medela Harmony Manual Breast Pump: Breastfeeding was one of the most painful and stressful things I’ve ever done, at least in the beginning, and being able to manually pump to make sure that my babies were fed with my breastmilk was such a relief. We graduated from it once my babies' mouths grew bigger but it was such a life saver at the beginning.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for a newborn can feel overwhelming at first. There are so many products marketed as “must-haves,” and it can seem like you need everything before your baby arrives.

In reality, babies need far less than most marketing suggests.

A safe place to sleep, a way to feed them, diapers, clothing, and lots of love are the true essentials during those first few months.

Many parents quickly discover that some items they thought were necessary end up barely used, while other simple items become everyday lifesavers. One of the best approaches is to start with the basics and add items as you learn what works best for your baby and your lifestyle.

The newborn stage goes by incredibly fast. While it’s helpful to be prepared, try not to get too caught up in having the perfect setup.

Your baby doesn’t need perfection — they just need you.
